CMM Tips from a CMM!
Adrienne Tooley shares her advice on how to pass your CMM
In the meeting world, there are certain letters that just bring with them a tip of the ol’ hat. So we are so proud to announce that Adrienne Tooley, previous CMP-HP, is now adding another set of those letters to her title with her Certificate in Meeting Management, or CMM. Adrienne participated in the program in December of 2016 and was officially awarded her CMM in April, 2017, becoming one of only 1,222 people to be designated as such worldwide! The CMM is a certification offered by Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and the GBTA Foundation, which they equate to MBA-level education. It’s 3.5 days of education followed by eight hours of advanced-level online coursework and culminates with a final project where the applicant has to solve a real-world business problem. In short, it’s no joke.
It’s a daunting process and tests the applicant’s planning level, problem solving ability, budgeting capability, leadership, processes and more. To even qualify, you have to have a minimum of 7 years professional experience. But for Adrienne, the skills and knowledge earned, and we will add in bragging rights, were well worth it.
Thinking of joining Adrienne in the CMM club? Here are her top three tips on how to succeed in the course.
Read the Materials Early
1 | Read the materials before the immersion portion of the course.
It’s a lot, but it makes SUCH a big difference in being prepared. There are going to be things that you read that you just won’t understand (like some of the financial stuff). Reading it ahead of time gives you the opportunity to discuss with your coworkers or people you may know who may have some insight.
Schedule Yourself to be Booked
2 | Come into the immersion course knowing that you won’t have time to do other things.
Meaning, don’t plan on spending your evening time to do your “real job” work. You won’t have time, you’ll be exhausted and it will keep you from spending time bonding with your group, which is vital. It’s a mini-MBA immersion course, and your brain will be tired at the end of the day.
Use Who and What You Know
3 | Use your resources and what you already know for the final paper
Many people make it this big, daunting, scary thing… it’s not a fun paper to write, but when you know the topic well, getting the words out is easy. Talk to your coworkers and peers about your topic and ideas – they may have incredible suggestions that you didn’t even think about. It worked for me!
